Purses, totes, bags…..Whatever you want to haul your essentials around in, this project will do just that! Don’t let the name fool you though, this purse can be made and used in all seasons.

I originally designed this pattern back in March when all the signs of Spring were blooming. I wanted to name it the Spring Blooms purse but it took me so long to finalize the written instructions and get pictures taken that Fall is now knocking on the door, so I’ve switched from Spring to Autumn. Clever huh?!

I wanted this purse to be both roomy and stylish. I’d seen a technique on Instagram using the Waistcoat or “knit” crochet stitch that created a gorgeous staggered spiral look when worked in the round so I went about recreating it here in this design.

I chose Lion Brand Fast Track yarn because I wanted something similar to t-shirt yarn but not quite so heavy or chunky. Fast Track is a chainette-style yarn that works up quickly and has just the right amount of stretch. The yarn comes in a variety of colors and is made from lightweight cotton and polyester. Even though I doubled the yarn for this pattern , it doesn’t weigh the purse down but does make for a thick purse body that is super durable!

• *Clover Jumbo Amour US size M/N 9 mm crochet hook
• *Lion Brand Yarn Fast Track Yarn (60% Cotton/ 40% Polyester yarn, 149 yds/136m, 8oz/227g) 1 skein Purple Train or Trucker’s Taupe (Color A), 3 skeins Go Kart Green or Chopper Grey (Color B)
• Microfiber braided handles with silver rings (tan, brown or other desired color from Joann’s)
• stitch marker, safety pin, or contrasting scrap of yarn
• scissors
• large eye tapestry needle

Gauge

8 sc  x 9 rows = 4″ square

Sizing

Finished size: 15″W x 11″H

Abbreviations and Glossary (US Terms)

• ch – chain
• sl st – slip stitch
• sc – single crochet
• st/sts – stitch/stitches
• sk – skip
• PM – place marker
• BLO – back loop only

Stitch Definition

Waistcoat or knit stitch – Starting on Round 14, you’ll begin working 2 sc in between the posts of the next sc st. Working between the posts is know as the waistcoat or knit stitch. For a detailed look at how to work between the posts, check out this resource from Make & Do Crew.

Pattern Notes

• Pattern is worked in the round with 2 strands of yarn held together throughout
• Make note to purchase yarn skeins with the same dye lot. Colors between lot numbers can vary slightly (as you can see in my Green/Taupe sample, I worked 2 strands of taupe with different dye lots).
• PM in first st of each round. Move the marker up as you go.

Pattern Instructions

With 2 strands of Color A, ch 21.

Round 1: sc twice in 2nd ch from hook. sc in next 18 ch across. Work 3 sc in last st of foundation ch. Instead of turning to work back across the sc stitches you just made, rotate your work clockwise vertically and continue crocheting in the bottom loops of the foundation ch. 19 sc across. – 42 sc

PM in first st of each round and move up each round throughout.

Round 2: work 2 sc in next 3 sts, 18 sc across. Work 2 sc in next 3 sts, 18 sc across to marker. – 48 sc

Round 3: (2 sc in next, 1 sc in next st) three times, 18 sc across, (2 sc in next, 1 sc in next st) three times, 18 sc across to marker. – 54 sc

Round 4: (2 sc in next, 1 sc in next 2 sts) three times, 18 sc across, (2 sc in next, 1 sc in next 2 sts) three times, 18 sc across to marker. – 60 sc

Remove marker and sc 5. PM.

Round 5: sc in BLO of each st around to marker. – 60 sc

Round 6-12: sc in each st around to marker. – 60 sc

Round 13: switch to Color B. *sk 1, sc 2 in next st. Repeat from * around to marker. – 60 sc

Round 14: sk first st. Work 2 sc in between the posts of next sc st. *sk 1, sc 2 in between posts of next st. Repeat from * around to marker. – 60 sc

Round 15-26: Repeat Round 14.

Round 27: *sk 1, lay purse handle ring in front of next st. Insert hook through ring and work 2 sc in between posts of next sc.* ^Work (sk 1, 2 sc in between posts of next st) 7 times.^ Repeat from * to * with the last metal ring of the first purse handle. Repeat from ^ to ^. Repeat from * to * with the first metal ring of second purse handle. Repeat from ^ to ^. Repeat from * to * one last time with the last ring of second purse handle. Work (sk 1, 2 sc in between posts of next st) in remaining sts around to marker.

Round 28 & 29: Repeat Round 14.

Round 30: sk first st. Work 2 sc in between the posts of next sc st. *sk 1, sc 2 in between posts of next st. Repeat from * until 4 stitches before marker. sk 1, sl st in next 3 sts. – 60 sc

Fasten off, pull tail through to the inside of the purse, and weave in ends.
