If you hadn’t heard the latest on new yarns released by Yarnspirations, they’ve recently released a special variant of their popular Bernat Maker yarn called Bernat Maker Outdoor. This yarn is constructed similarly to the original Bernat Maker that we know and love (tube like yarn lightly stuffed inside to give it volume), the main difference with the Outdoor yarn being that it is fade resistant and perfect for outdoor patio projects and other decorative accessories.

The Bernat Maker Outdoor yarn is exclusive to Joann’s stores and Joann.com currently. The range of colors available are perfect for brightening up any outdoor space and come in both solids and stripes! I got my hands on the red, white and blue and was inspired to make something decorative and patriotic in honor of Independence Day happening next week here in the US!

The buntings I designed work up fast with this bulky 5 weight yarn together with my 8.00 Furls streamline hook. I also love the staggered texture that appears from working in the back loop only and the look of the ruffled edge so reminiscent of the fabric buntings you might find in a retail store. If you work quickly, you can have a handful of these made to string up at your Independence Day BBQ this weekend! Since we aren’t doing anything or going anywhere for our 4th of July holiday, I’ll be displaying these along the railing of my front porch (which just so happens to be in the direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day so I’ll be putting the fade resistant guarantee to the test!).

Patriotic Flag Bunting

Materials

• US size M/8.00 mm Furls Streamline crochet hook (camwood)
• Bernat Maker Outdoor (68% Acrylic, 32% Nylon yarn, 249 yds/228m, 8.8oz/250g), 1 ball each Beach Red (Color A), Fresh White (Color B), and Royal Blue (Color C)
• scissors
• large eye tapestry needle
• *multi-purpose rope (I used 1/4″ x 50 ft braided polypropylene rope)

Gauge

• 18 sts across = 4″/ 10 cm
• Gauge is not essential

Size

• Finished size: 13″W x 6.5″H

Abbreviations

• ch – chain
• hdc – half double crochet
• st – stitch
• sts – stitches

Special Stitches & Techniques

Adjustable loop: Holding the yarn a few inches from the end, wrap around your finger. Do not remove. Insert hook into the wrap and draw up a loop of working yarn. Chain one to secure the loop, then remove from finger. Work stitches of first round in the loop. Pull gently, but firmly, on tail to tighten.

Pattern Notes

Each bunting is worked back and forth in rows.

All Hdc stitches (except those worked in the adjustable loop) are worked in the back loop only.

Color changes are made by working the beginning of the last hdc stitch of the current row in the current color then finishing the “yarn over pull through all loops on hook” in the new color to be worked.

Ch 2 does not count as first hdc.

Pattern Instructions

With Color A, make adjustable loop. Hdc 6 in loop then pull tail to tighten.

From here on out, all hdc stitches are worked in the back loop only.

Row 1: Ch 2, work 2 hdc in each st across – 12 hdc

Row 2: Ch 2, *work 2 hdc in first st, 1 hdc in next st. Repeat from * to last st  – 18 hdc

Fasten off Color A

Row 3: With Color B, Ch 2, *work 2 hdc in first st, 1 hdc in next 2 sts. Repeat from * to last st – 24 hdc

Row 4: Ch 2, *work 2 hdc in first st, 1 hdc in next 3 sts. Repeat from * to last st – 30 hdc

Fasten off Color B

Row 5: With Color C, Ch 2, *work 2 hdc in first st, 1 hdc in next 4 sts. Repeat from * to last st – 36 hdc

Row 6: Ch 2, *work 2 hdc in first st, 1 hdc in next 5 sts. Repeat from * to last st – 42 hdc

Fasten off Color C

Row 7: With Color B, Ch 2, *work 2 hdc in first st, 1 hdc in next 6 sts. Repeat from * to last st – 48 hdc

Row 8: Ch 2, *work 2 hdc in first st, 1 hdc in next st. Repeat from * to last st – 72 hdc

Fasten off Color B

Row 9: With Color A, Ch 2, work 2 hdc in each st across – 144 hdc

Finishing: Fasten off. Weave in all ends with large eye tapestry needle.

Repeat the pattern as many times as needed for your preferred display method.

To display my buntings, I used a braided rope and strung/wove it through the top in between stitches as pictured.
