For the last several months, I’ve been toying with the idea of teaching crochet classes locally, but haven’t made the leap to do so just yet. I wanted to prepare myself for such a venture and while I have many, many years experience crocheting, I don’t really have any formal teaching experience.

I did some research and found that the Craft Yarn Council offers a correspondence course to become a certified instructor through their web site. I said, “Why not!?” and jumped at the chance to sharpen my crochet skills and challenge myself to teach others about a craft I love so much.

For the certified instructor program, the project I chose as my beginner level project was a simple crochet eyeglass case. I felt it could be easily taught to someone who’s never picked up a crochet hook before in their life. With a little time and patience, a beginner can learn to create a slip knot, foundation chain, and how to single crochet with the ending result of a finished project perfect for everyday use.

While the eyeglass case I submitted for my project was similar to this, I felt it needed some more “pizzazz”.  Since the pattern is essentially a swatch made entirely of single crochet stitches, it became the perfect canvas for a cross-stitch image. I chose a rose, but any small cross-stitch image would look great!

Materials

• • 1 US size H/5.00 mm crochet hook, I recommend this ergonomic crochet hook set from Clover
  • 3.5 oz skein size 4 medium weight cotton yarn like I Love This Cotton from Hobby Lobby in Dove (or other desired color)
  • embroidery floss in green and pink
  • scissors
  • tapestry needle

Abbreviations

• ch – chain
• sc – single crochet
• st – stitch

Pattern Notes

Pattern Instructions

1. Ch 23.
2. Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and each st to end of row. Turn.
3. Row 2-30: ch 1, sc in each st to end of row. Turn.
4. Fasten off, leaving a long tail approximately 24 inches for sewing.

Cross stitch Rose

The rose chart can be cross-stitched on either the right or left side of your crochet swatch. From the top of your swatch, count down 9 rows and mark with a stray piece of yarn or stitch marker. This is where you’ll begin cross-stitiching. With your tapestry needle threaded with pink embroidery floss, begin cross-stitching the top of the rose from the chart and make your way across and down. Switch to green and continue cross-stitching the stem. Tie off cross-stitching and/or weave into the back side.

Assembly

Fold your crochet swatch in half with the cross-stitch design facing outward. Use your tapestry needle and long tail to sew along the side edge and bottom using the whip stitch or the mattress stitch to make an invisible seam, leaving the top open for the case opening.
