I don’t know about you all, but I’ve got to have my coffee first thing in the morning to really get the day going. To that degree, I almost never have time to brew any before I hustle out of the house, kids in tow to drop off at daycare, and make my way to work. My java fix usually comes as a scheduled stop at the quickest/nearest coffee place on the way into the office.

Many times while walking from the car to my office I’ve found that my cup o’ joe is just too hot to handle, resulting in a constant juggle back and forth in my hands. I knew that I needed to put crochet to the task and find a stylish, coffee-carrying solution. Thus, my textured crochet coffee cup cozy was born!

I now keep one of these in my purse or car at all times for my java run each morning. It’s easy to slip on to-go cups and is an Eco-friendly, reusable alternative to cardboard coffee sleeves. Additionally, I love the look and feel of the textured stitch used in this pattern.

Materials

• 1 US size G/4.00 mm crochet hook, I recommend this ergonomic crochet hook set from Clover
• 3.5 oz skein size 4 medium weight mercerized cotton yarn like 24/7 Cotton Yarn from Lion Brand in Taupe (or other desired color)
• wooden or plastic button (1 – 1/8 in. or 28mm)
• scissors
• tapestry needle

Abbreviations

• sl st – slip stitch
• ch – chain
• hdc – half double crochet
• tch – turning ch

Pattern Notes

The texture in the pattern comes from a special stitch called the Crunch Stitch, which is an alternation of slip stitch and half double crochet. The texture from the stitch is reversible and makes for a nicely insulated fabric to keep your hands cool while holding your cup of coffee or tea!

Pattern Instructions

1. 1. Ch 39.
   2. Row 1: Skip first 2 ch (counts as 1 hdc). *sl st in next ch. 1 hdc in next ch. Repeat from * to the end of the row ending with sl st in last ch. Turn.
   3. Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as 1 hdc). Skip 1 stitch, *sl st in next hdc, 1 hdc in next stitch. Rep from * ending with sl st in tch. Turn.
   4. Rows 3-14: Repeat Row 2.
   5. Row 15: Ch 2. Turn your piece lengthwise. Working along the short side of the sleeve, work (sl st, hdc) 5 times. sl st in last ch 2 tch. Turn.
   6. Row 16-17:  Ch 2 (counts as 1 hdc). Skip 1 stitch, *sl st in next hdc, 1 hdc in next stitch. Rep from * ending with sl st in tch. Turn.
   7. Buttonhole
      1. Row 18: Ch 2. sl st in next hdc st, 1 hdc in next, 1 sl st in next. Ch 4, skip 4, 1 hdc in next, sl st in next, 1 hdc in last st. sl st in tch. Turn.
      2. Row 19: Ch 2. Skip 1 stitch, sl st in next hdc, 1 hdc in next stitch, then 1 sl st in next st. Work hdc, sl st twice in ch 4 space. 1 hdc in next st, sl st in next, then 1 hdc in last st. sl st in tch. Turn.
      3. Row 20: Repeat Row 16.
   8. Fasten off.

Finish

Sew your button on the opposite end of the sleeve from the button hole. Weave in ends.
